OM’s 21-23 Bec Old Boys

Allianz Park
K.O. 14:00
Despite dominating the majority of the match and periods of brilliant play, OM’s couldn’t hold on and lost to Bec Old Boys in front of a record OM’s crowd of 7 people at Allianz Park.
The warm up began at 12.30 to an interesting soundtrack blaring out of the Allianz PA system. Rumours were going round that Rob Seger had lent his iPod to the Allianz staff, so some gentle touch to the sound of Avril Lavine got the team in the right mindset for the first pre-season match of the season for the Choccy and Whites.
The team pumped from Avril’s tunes started well, defended very well and repelled an some early pressure from Bec and moments later a fantastic long kick over the top and chase from Alexander Spencer-hope from within our own 22 downfield led to the first try of the day. A great start.
OM’s settled well into the game but struggled to string multiple phases together, not helped by some interesting forward pass calls by the ref.
Going into the break OM’s had the lead 13-10, the plan being to tidy up sloppy mistakes, string a few phases together and get it to the pace men out wide. Unfortunately our lack of playing time together showed, and despite some strong work by Sam Askham in the summer transfer window picking up a number of new faces on a free transfer, and being man for man the better team, we conceded two tries, one of which is the leading contender for ‘most obvious knock on of the season’.
The last 5 minutes we transformed into a different team, camping on the opposition line and playing a very clinical game, with no mistakes and scored a great try out wide. This is the type of rugby we are aiming to play, ambitious, aggressive and clinical. If we can play like that for large portions of matches, we will win this league for sure.
Final score 21-23.
A big thanks to all the new faces who came down. Despite the loss, I thoroughly enjoyed playing at Allianz. A plea to bring your mates down and help us build a bigger, better team, and better club. Shout out to Jake Suggwho had an absolute stormer, showing the tackling skills and complete disregard for his own personal safety of a young Lewis Moody. You are the first MoTM of the season.
Finally a big thanks to Ralph Murduck for putting in a really big, physical performance for 80 mins only a couple of weeks away from his wedding.Rebecca Reynolds – a big thanks from all of us for letting him play.
